Homeopathy
When did homeopathy begin?
Throughout its history of 200 years, homeopathic medicine has always been as diverse as the symptoms that it treats. Homeopathy was developed by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann in 1796 and is currently being used all over the world. Many thousands of remedies are available and as such part of a homeopaths skill is to match the presenting symptoms, character and nature of the patient to the most appropriate remedy. Whether being used alongside conventional medicine, as a general pick me up for body and mind, or for targeting specific symptoms, homeopathy has proved to be safe and effective.
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a form of complementary medicine that gently stimulates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It is a holistic form of medicine which means that it does not treat individual symptoms or a named diagnosis but rather the whole individual; physical, mental, and emotional. By treating the person as a whole homeopathy not only addresses the symptoms experienced, but also explores the underlying cause of disease making treatment deeper and longer lasting.
What are the homeopathic principles?
Homeopathy works on the principle of the ‘Law of Similars’. The law states 'that which makes sick shall heal'. In other words, a substance which causes particular symptoms in a healthy person will cure those same symptoms in an ill person. Hahnemann named the practice Homeopathy from the Greek homoios (the same) and pathos (suffering). An example of this can be illustrated by the physical symptoms caused by peeling an onion. The symptoms can include a runny nose, stinging and watery eyes, and a sore throat. The homeopathic remedy Allium Cepa which is made from an onion, is one of the remedies used for the treatment of Hay Fever when these are the presenting symptoms
What is homeopathy used to treat?
Homeopathy is used to treat everything from acute fevers, sore throats and toothache, to chronic illnesses including allergies, hay fever, eczema, asthma, anxiety, stress, IBS and women’s complaints, such as those associated with the menopause. Homeopathic treatment works with your body's own healing power to bring health and well being. Some underlying principles of treatment are:
- Patients are treated as individuals, not as a collection of disease labels
- Homeopathy treats all your symptoms - mental, emotional and physical
- Homeopathic remedies are gentle, subtle and powerful
What are Homeopathic Remedies?
Homeopathic remedies are derived from a variety of natural materials including plants, minerals, metals and animal products and these are highly diluted during a process called potentisation. During this process the remedy is succussed, or shaken, in order to trigger the reaction within the remedy which makes it so potent. The more a remedy is diluted and succussed, the more potent or powerful it becomes.
Homeopathic remedies are non toxic, non-addictive and have no side-effects. They are very safe for all ages of people including pregnant women, babies and even the very frail. Remedies can come in various forms including liquids, powders and pills.
